Norms are the agreed‐upon expectations and rules by which a culture guides the behavior of its members in any given situation. Of course, norms vary widely across cultural groups. A recent example of that comes to mind is a controversial shirt made by the world renowned fashion brand Gucci. A few moths ago, Gucci released a sweater: It was black with a high turtleneck collar that covered the lower half of the face with a cutout for the mouth that was rimmed in bright red. Some people called for a boycott of the brand. Others threatened to burn any Gucci merchandise in their own closets. This isn’t the first time a fashion brand has crossed the line when it comes to their clothes and race. The brand H&M had also recently released a hoodie that had the words “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” printed on it, receiving major backlash and criticism. These brands have to realize that there’s a boundary when it comes to designing clothes and the words that they choose to print on them.
